The Associated Press reported that a Mexican judge has denied Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman’s request to block extradition to the United States because the United States had not made a request to extradite Guzman.

On February 22, 2014, Guzman was arrested and charged with running an international drug trafficking ring. Guzman had escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001, and he had been living in hiding since that time.

According to Reuters , Guzman is wanted in 54 countries. Last Monday, Guzman’s lawyers filed an injunction to block Guzman’s extradition to the United States.

There isn’t any word on whether Guzman has filed an injunction in any of the other countries where he has been charged with drug trafficking.

During an interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” the House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul (R-MI) told host Wolf Blitzer that Guzman’s escape in 2001 and the “corruption” in Mexico is why he will request that Guzman be extradited to the United States.

According to the Associated Press, the Mexican government said that the extradition to the United States will not occur any time soon.
